Haiti might not be the first place you think of when going on vacation. For many people, it is associated with natural disasters, death, and voodoo, but you know what? Haiti is one of the most beautiful places on the planet. It’s beautiful azure skies, clear blue seas, and golden shores, along with its lush green mountains and exotic wildlife combine to make it a paradise equal to any other in the Caribbean region, which is perhaps why more people are choosing to vacation there. If you decide to join them, be sure to check out these Haitian beauty spots:
The Citadelle Laferrière
The Citadelle Laferrière is a spectacular fortress built on top of a huge mountain when Haiti gained its independence. It was built to protect the country from an invasion by the French and even now it is a beautiful example of architecture from that time. Perhaps, the only thing better than the fortress itself are the spectacular views of the surrounding fields and rolling hills that it affords you.
Bassin Bleu is an off-the-beaten-track waterfall located in the Jacmel hills. If you would like to see it, you must follow a trail right up to its basin, where you can swim, dive and relax in relative seclusion. It’s like your own little bit of paradise.
The Cathedral Notre Dame de Cap Haitien
Located in Cap-Haitien, this pretty Catholic Cathedral is an attractive and peaceful spot to rest and relax after a long day exploring the Cap-Haitien in all of its colonial splendor. The domed church building, with its white walls and impressive architecture, itself is pretty special, but there is a lovely park just in front of it, which is even prettier and a great place to sit and contemplate on your travels.
The Palace of Sans-Souci
Part of this spectacular palace was destroyed when an earthquake hit Haiti in 1842, but that has not diminished its beauty. The Palace of Sans-Souci was once home to Henri Christophe I –a slave turned king, and you can feel history seeping out of every pore in the palace, which is characterized by its opulent staircases and huge arched windows.
Of course, you can’t visit the Caribbean without spending some time on the beach, and when you’re in Haiti, Kokoye Beach is the place you want to be. Soft white sand, lush green palm trees, and clear blue waters combine with hiking tours, snorkeling activities and boat trips to make this one of the best beaches you are very likely to encounter.
Labadee Zip-lining Tour
If you like action and spectacular views, why not combine the two with a zip-lining tour of Haiti? Head to Labadee beach where you can put on a harness and travel at great speeds over the Dragon’s Breath Flight Line, taking in views of the island that you would not get any other way.
Have you ever taken a trip to Haiti? Are there any beauty spots I’ve missed that you think could be worth visiting?
