While every new parent expects a few sleepless nights, most of us assume those tough times will be behind us by the time our youngsters reach six months or so. We certainly don’t imagine that they’ll still be in the habit of waking us when they’re four, five, six, or beyond. Yet, this is a reality that many parents face.
In some cases, this can be due to behavioral issues, while other children experience genuine health complaints that prevent them from getting the sleep they need. Either way, it’s a nightmare for both parties, and turning your attention to their bedroom could help more than you realize.
Of course, you will still need to seek medical advice if you think health issues are the reason for these sleepless nights. But, we’ve also got some fast-action bedroom hacks that could at least improve the situation for the time being.
# 1 – Make that bedroom a fun place
An unwelcoming room that your child doesn’t feel comfortable within will lead to much worse sleep than a space they love. As such, you first need to focus on making their bedroom a fun space that they can feel comfier within. Admittedly, you do need to be careful of having them associate their bedroom with playtime, but do whatever you can to show them that this is their haven. Spending time together at bedtime reading, etc. can work wonders for this, or you might want to let them choose a fun character bed or other furniture additions they can’t get enough of.
# 2 – Reduce sound as much as you can
Sounds such as passing cars or even the television downstairs can be problematic for kids who struggle to sleep. As such, you should also focus on aspects of room design that reduce noise. Of course, you may need to pair this investment with a night light to keep anxiety at bay. But, turning this off when your youngster gets to sleep makes it far less likely that they’ll knock on your door in the night.
Sleepless nights aren’t good for anyone, and tackling this issue sooner rather than later is essential. Given that your child also gets a brand new bedroom this way, we would say it’s an effort that really does provide the best of both worlds.
