Our homes are our castles, and within those walls are all of our prized possessions (including the people that we live with). So in order to keep all of those things safe and secure, there are some steps that you should be taking (if you haven’t already). One of the obvious things to have is home or contents insurance, depending if you own or rent. But that only deals with the problem after it has happened. Follow these tips, and then you’ll be able to stop any damage or burglaries from happening in the first place.
Check Your Doors
As crazy as it sounds, a potential burglar is going to check the actual doorways first. If the locks aren’t very secure or they can be easily picked, then it could be easy for them to be smashed open or have the lock picked. So take a look at your doors or possible entrance ways and look for anything that could be improved. Do you hang your keys somewhere visible, if someone was to look through the windows or postbox? Moving small things like that out of sight can make a massive difference.
Check Your Windows
Just like you should check your doors, you should also check your windows. They can be a potential entryway for someone too. If your windows are tatty, the frames are wooden, and they are single glazed, then they are a much more attractive option to a potential burglar. So if you need to get more secure windows, then it is a good time to look into them. Choosing double glazed windows from somewhere like Milgard replacement windows is a great way to deter a thief. Just make sure that you don’t have the keys left in the windows on the inside. That could be tempting to someone who is trying to break in.
Stage a Break In
With a friend or neighbor, it can be a good idea to stage a break-in of your home. When you see your home every day, it can be hard to see the errors with it. So a fresh pair of eyes will be able to tell you what might need to be changed in order to make it more secure. They might see something that you don’t see or haven’t thought about before.
Hide Possessions in Unusual Places
If someone did manage to get into your home, then where are they going to look for family jewels or jewelry? The bedroom and bedside cabinets are the typical places to look for that kind of thing, right? So in order to frustrate the thief as time is precious to them, put your possessions in unlikely places. Spread valuables around the house, or better yet, get an unbreakable safe, that is hidden. Then they have no chance of getting your precious things.
