If you want a look that is both glamorous and edgy, you need to check out the rock chick look. Inspired by female rock royalty like Courtney Love, Debbie Harry, and Gwen Stefani, the rock chick look is at once feminine, powerful and fun. It is also a look that can be as impressive when out running errands as it is on an evening out, but you need to be cool, confident and a little bit fierce if you want to pull the look off.
A riot grrrl attitude is as important as the clothes in pulling off a successful look, but you do need the clothes, so check out my list of rock chick essentials:
Liberal Amounts of Leather
Leather and rebellion have been linked at least since the 50’s when Marlon Brando rocked the look in The Wild One. Later, it was adopted as something of a uniform by rockers around the world. What this means is that you need to have at least a couple of leather items in your wardrobe if you want to pull off the fierce rock chick look. A leather jacket is probably the best choice, as you can wear it with most things, and it will instantly give your outfit an edge, but leather pants and boots are also rock chick staples.
Denim jeans have been worn by rockers since rockers were a thing. The more faded, the better (unless they’re black) and if you’re going for a grungier look, a few rips and tears won’t go amiss.
Both leather jackets and jeans go great with a vintage band shirt. In fact, the combo is classic rock chick and perfect for more casual occasions.
If you want to create a slightly more feminine rock chick look, make Courtney Love your style idol. Whatever you might think of her, in her heyday as Queen of Rock, she had pretty awesome style. Courtney favored vintage tea dresses, baby dolls, and sexy slip dresses depending on the occasion, so take a leaf out of her book and throw in some lace and velvet into the mix for a sexy, feminine rock chick look.
Stainless steel jewelry is the rock chick’s best friend. If you are going for a subtle look, a plain chain or cross is ideal, but if you really want to show off your edge skulls, hearts, daggers, and snakes are all good jewelry options. Stick to silver tones, though – they suit the rocker look much better than yellow gold.
Leather boots are sexy, and they are a rock chick staple, so be sure to pick up at least one pair. If you want to create a truly sexy look go for knee or even thigh high boots, teamed with a sexy dress and stockings, or if you’re more into the riot grrrl, grunge look, pick up a pair of Dr. Martens, which will look great with everything from denim hot pants to a pretty slip dress.
However you decide to create your own rocker inspired wardrobe, remember that attitude is 50 percent of a successful rock chick look!
